How to Use Meditation for Spiritual Connection
People meditate for different reasons whether they do it to relax, alleviate anxiety, focus, spirituality, or anything else. However, when meditation is done for spiritual reasons, the focus is usually seen in one of these two views:
1. To quiet the conscious mind in order to hear from your higher self.
2. To quiet the world around you in order to hear from God or The Universe.
To some these two views are expressing the exact same ideas and to others they can be seen as two completely different ways of thinking. Our belief systems cause us to see these things differently, but in spiritual meditation I think it’s safe to say that the goal for everyone is usually to tap into or connect with an energy higher than ourselves to receive wisdom and/or guidance.
Here are a few tips to begin your spiritual meditation practice:
- If you are new to meditation it’s smart to begin with a timer. Start off with short intervals like 2-5 minutes and as you get more comfortable with your practice, increase to 10 then 20, until you no longer need a timer.
- Once you have set your timer, get in a comfortable position. You do not have to sit on the floor with your legs crossed. Sit in a position that is comfortable for you.
- Begin to take slow, deep, relaxing breaths. The purpose of this step is to engage with your breath, connect your mind with your body, and turn your awareness inward. Any thoughts outside of your breath should begin to gently melt away.
- As thoughts begin to move about, observe them without judgement and gently bring your awareness back to your breath. Meditation isn’t as much of clearing your mind as it is like watching your thoughts on a movie screen.
- Begin to focus on feelings of gratitude. What are you grateful for? As things that you are grateful for begin to come to your thoughts, think of why you are grateful for each of those things. Gratitude is the key to happiness.
- What is it that you want? How do you see God or the Universe helping you to receive it? Begin to visualize this process. See yourself in the position that you want to be in. Visualization creates belief. This is your way of asking for what you want then believing that it is so. Ask, believe and it IS so!
- As you go through these steps remember to observe the thoughts, ideas, and feelings that you experience. If you wish to further explore them, take the next step and write them down in a journal after your meditation session. This will inspire deeper thought and will help with connecting the dots and finding deeper meanings to your meditation experiences.
Each meditation session will be unique as each session will bring a new experience. Your connection to spirit in each session may vary depending on where you are that day. Approach each practice with acceptance of where you are today and what your experience will be.
