What is meditation?
Meditation has been encouraged in my life for as long as I can remember, but I found it difficult to be comfortable practicing until I truly understood what it was. If you are new to meditation you may be coming into your practice carrying a common misconception, that meditation is clearing your mind of all thoughts. The truth is, meditation can happen in many different ways.
Generally speaking, meditation is mindfulness practice. It’s the state of being consciously aware while doing what ever it is that you are doing. Yes, it is possible to meditate while walking the dog, eating lunch, or even taking a bath. Although most of us believe meditation can only look like lighting candles, sitting in lotus pose (crossed legged) on the floor with our eyes closed while a rain forest track plays in the background. This could be meditation also, but it is not the only way. The single element that shifts these examples from daily actions to forms of meditation is awareness.
While it is possible to become mindfully and consciously aware while doing anything, finding a quiet space to comfortably sit and be alone will allow you to take your meditation (awareness) practice deeper.

Prepare your mind and body for what you are about to do.
Engage with your breath. Notice the air as it enters and exits your body.
Acquire awareness of your body. Notice how your body connects with the Earth as you sit. Notice if there is any tension in your body.
Center your thoughts. They will wander, it’s natural! When they do, notice them and gently bring your attention back to your breath.
Embrace only this very moment and what is happening now. Nothing else!
Meditation isn’t always easy, particularly not in the beginning. With practice we become better and we benefit from practicing whether we feel like we are good at it or not.
